Rolling Grizzlies


This week I got to go to a Rolling Grizzlies practice. This is Memphis’ official wheelchair basketball team. This was an incredible experience. In my opinion, wheelchair basketball is much more intense than traditional basketball. I learned the rules are only slightly modified to work with the needs of the wheelchairs, and there is much more contact. 

I was presented with this opportunity through my neurological aspects class, but wheelchairs are a big personal interest of mine, so as you can imagine I was very excited and had over a million questions for the team. 

I was surprised to hear they have trouble getting sponsors and recruitment is an issue for them. The current coach even said it took him ten years just to find the team. If possible I would love to find a way to work with the team to improve their PR. They are such a talented group that, with the right exposure and opportunities, could share this talent with so many people.

post interview reflection

How do you feel the interview went overall?  i felt that it went well. I was a bit awkward, but i attribute that to nerves. I think next time when i prepare i need to spend some time calming down before hand. I think I was able to give concise and conversational answers. How did you prepare for the interview? I read over an article on the top 11 interview questions and answers to give from the AOTA website. I also conversed with my peers and suggested we tell each other how we think they should answer. It helps to have an outsiders perspective when looking at yourself What went differently than you expected? I was prepared for the interview question to be more centered towards my strengths and weaknesses rather than what I look for in a career. Leadership Glyf

Looking at my glyf that i made in my first year of OT school was a crazy moment. I feel like I'm light years ahead of where i was then. It feels like I'm at a point I didn't think I would ever make it to. I partially expected my glyf from the other day to look different. The only difference was the face shape. This represented thinking a leader was born or raised. I said before they were born leaders because i believe all leaders need to have something inside them that sparks the fire of leadership. I still feel that way but i decided to change my answer because even if you are born with a talent, you wont develop that unless you nurture and encourage those qualities. Overall, I haven't changed much in terms of my beliefs on leadership, but at least I know that my beliefs are backed up this time due to my experiences throughout school.
