  • It's important to know the limitations of the driver so you can help them adapt safely.
  • Safety is the number one priority.
  • No one will be happy when told they are no longer able to drive
    • keep that in mind when trying to win them over
    • don’t patronize them, try to understand their feeling of loss and relate that to them
  • Driving is the hardest thing you'll do in your day 
    • It has physical demands as well as requiring cognitive and executive function
    • Problems that can interfere with driving are:
      • Impulsivity, aggression, physical limitations, limitations in quick decision making, and more
  • hand controls vehicles require pushing to control the breaks and pulling to accelerate
    • these vehicles are constructed this way in anticipation of G-force
    • if you were to pull when stopping the force of the car slowing would interfere with your ability to successfully pull hard enough to stop safely
Describe two occupational therapy interventions based on the topic. 
  • Training for an individual who has left side neglect due to a right hemisphere CVA.
    • The activity will involve driving in a safe location, like a driving course or empty parking lot
    • reminders during task will be given to look left before merging
    •  
  • Group therapy for patients with TBIs working on frustration management
    • The inability to control impulsivity and anger may interfere with safe decision making
    • This group with allow patients to discuss feeling they have when driving and even share tips for staying safe and grounded when driving
